UPMC and Southwest Airlines Share the Spirit® Partnership

UPMC is pleased to participate in the Southwest Airlines Share the Spirit® Medical Transportation Charitable Partnership, a program that provides transportation to
patients in need.

Beginning April 15, 2008, patients of UPMC Presbyterian and UPMC Shadyside who demonstrate both medical and financial need may receive one-time, roundtrip airline transportation to receive care at these facilities courtesy of Southwest Airlines. The passes will be used for patients who meet medical and financial eligibility requirements and their caregivers. Patients interested in learning more about this program may call Social Work
at 412-647-3255.

Other eligibility guidelines

Patients participating in the Share the Spirit® Program should be aware of the following guidelines:

  • Airline passes are for one-time use, are valid on Southwest-operated flights only, and may not be used on flights involving Southwest partners.

  • Patients and caregivers participating in this program must be able to board a Boeing 737 aircraft and sit with a seatbelt fastened for the duration of the flight.

  • The passenger may not require a constant supply of compressed or liquid oxygen or extensive medical care during the flight.

  • A medical certificate stating that the passenger will be able to complete the duration of the flight without medical care may be required.
